When Your Assignment Feels Too Big: Moses and the Fear of Speaking
What do you do when God calls you to something that feels far bigger than you?
When the weight of the assignment makes you want to run?
Moses knew that feeling and tried to convince God to choose someone else.
When we think of Moses, we picture the Red Sea parting, plagues sent to Pharaoh, and tablets from Mount Sinai. But we often forget how it started:
With fear.
With excuses.
With insecurity.
When God called Moses from the burning bush, it wasn’t an immediate yes. It was hesitation wrapped in self-doubt.
“O my Lord, I am not eloquent… but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”
— Exodus 4:10 NKJV
Moses didn’t feel qualified.
He didn’t believe he could lead.
He thought his weakness disqualified him from greatness.
But here’s the truth:
God wasn’t looking for a polished speaker.
He was looking for a surrendered heart.
God didn’t argue with Moses about his flaws.
He simply reminded him of His own power.
“Who has made man’s mouth?… Have not I, the Lord?”
— Exodus 4:11 NKJV
If the assignment feels too big, you’re in good company.
Many of the people God used most didn’t feel ready.
But they said yes anyway.
The pressure you feel isn’t proof that you’re in the wrong place.
It might be proof that God is pulling something greater out of you.
Moses wasn’t perfect. He needed help. He stumbled.
But he obeyed.
And because of that obedience, a nation was delivered.
So if your calling feels too heavy…
If your voice feels too small…
If the fear feels louder than your faith…
Remember this:
God chose you anyway.
Not because of your ability
But because of your availability.

Closing Prayer
Lord, I confess the assignment feels overwhelming.
Sometimes I want to run like Moses, to shrink back because of my flaws.
But I choose to trust that if You’ve called me, You will equip me.
Speak through me. Strengthen me. Walk with me as I step into what You’ve placed in my hands.
Let my obedience be louder than my fear.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Have you ever felt unqualified for what God asked you to do?
Share your story or highlight the line that encouraged you most.
You never know who might be feeling the same way right now.
