Before the Battle, There’s a Process: David and Goliath Beyond the Stone
David didn’t just wake up one day and slay a giant.
What looked like a sudden victory was actually the result of years of hidden preparation.
Before the battle came the field. The sheep. The solitude. The process.
Everyone loves the moment the stone flies and the giant falls.
But few talk about the path that led David there.
Before he ever stood before Goliath, David had a history of faithfulness in the shadows.
He wasn’t just courageous he was consistent.
“But David said… ‘Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came… I went out after it and struck it.’”
— 1 Samuel 17:34 (NKJV)
God trained him to fight in the field where no one saw, and no one praised.
He learned to protect, to trust, to act without needing an audience.
The giant didn’t make David brave.
The battle didn’t give him faith.
It revealed what was already in him.
And here’s the part we often overlook:
David didn’t try to be like everyone else.
He turned down Saul’s armor.
He chose a sling instead of a sword.
He ran toward what others ran from.
That kind of confidence only comes from knowing God in the quiet.
So if you feel like you’re in a season of tending sheep, defending what’s small, or fighting unseen battles don’t despise it.
That’s where warriors are formed.
That’s where identity is forged.
That’s where God builds the kind of faith that brings down giants.
Don’t rush the process.
Let the field prepare you for the fight.
Because when your moment comes, you won’t need validation.
You’ll just need your stone.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, help me not to despise my current field.
Even if no one sees me, remind me You are watching.
Train me in the quiet places.
Give me courage to fight the small battles so I’m ready for the big ones.
Help me be faithful when it’s just me, You, and the sheep.
When the time comes, let me carry what You’ve trained me to carry and nothing more.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
