It Wasn’t Just a Setback, It Was a Setup for Surrender

She lost the job
She lost the plan
But what she found was worth more than both

Nobody signs up for a setback.
You do not plan on getting laid off.
You do not schedule heartbreak.
You do not pencil in disappointment like it is part of the dream.

But sometimes God allows what we did not expect
to bring us into what we would have never chosen on our own.

And when everything crumbled,
I did not get stronger first.
I got quiet.

It took losing something I thought I needed
to find the One I truly needed.

Because the real lesson was not in recovering my plan.
It was in surrendering to His.

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” — Proverbs 19:21

Let me say it plainly:
that setback was holy.

Not because it felt good.
Not because loss is easy.
But because it revealed what I had been leaning on without realizing it.

Success.
Control.
Recognition.
Timing.

And when all of that failed,
I found something sacred:

Surrender.

I did not shout my way out.
I whispered my way through.

God met me in the empty place
and filled me with peace.
Not the kind that comes from everything working out,
but the kind that makes no sense and still anchors you.

So no, it was not just a setback.
It was a setup.
Not for a comeback,
but for complete surrender.

And I have never been freer.

Because sometimes losing what held you up in your own strength
is the very thing that teaches you how to rest in God’s.

Sometimes what falls apart in your hands
makes room for something holier to be built in your heart.

Reflection

💭 What are you still holding onto that has already fallen apart?

💭 Could it be the very thing God is asking you to lay down so He can give you something better?

💭 What if this loss is not the end of your story, but the beginning of deeper surrender?

Prayer

God,
I lay it all down today.
Every plan I tried to force.
Every outcome I tried to manipulate.
Every timeline I obsessed over.

You are not just the God who restores.
You are the God who rebuilds from a surrendered heart.
And I offer You mine,
even the broken pieces.

Forgive me for chasing purpose without You.
Forgive me for measuring my value by my results.

Today I choose surrender.
Not out of fear, but out of faith.
Not because I have lost everything,
but because You are worth everything.

Take my life out of my own striving hands
and lead me into Your purpose.
Even if the road looks different than I imagined,
I trust You to write something better.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
