When You’re Called But Not Yet Crowned

There’s a unique kind of ache in knowing you’re chosen but still waiting.

David felt it. He was anointed as king while still smelling like sheep. A prophet poured oil over his head, declaring destiny and then he went right back to the field.

No crown.
No throne.
Just a fresh anointing and the same old assignment.

Anointed, but Not Yet Appointed

We love the moment of calling. The confirmation. The word from God. But what happens after the oil dries and the crown doesn’t come?

David was anointed by Samuel in 1 Samuel 16. But he didn’t actually become king until 2 Samuel 5. That’s nearly 15 years of waiting while still serving, still hiding, still being hunted by the man whose place he would take.

“David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.”
— 1 Samuel 18:14

He was called, but not yet crowned. And yet, he didn’t force the process. He allowed the waiting to refine him, not define him.

The Delay Is Not a Denial It’s Development

Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t.

God doesn’t just prepare the position for the person He prepares the person for the position.

In the delay, He builds:

Character that won’t crack under pressure

Discernment for leading others with wisdom

Dependence on Him rather than applause or visibility

What feels like a delay is often divine development.

What This Means for You

If you feel like you’ve been anointed but not yet appointed don’t panic.

You’re not behind. You’re in the middle of God’s intentional process. The longer the preparation, the heavier the assignment. The crown may not be on your head yet, but the oil is still active.

Just like David, God is shaping you in the shadows. He’s teaching you how to lead without a title, how to worship without a platform, and how to fight without recognition.

Reflection Questions:

What has God already anointed me for even if I haven’t stepped into it yet?

Am I trying to force a crown God hasn’t placed yet?

How can I remain faithful in this “in-between” season?

Final Encouragement

You may still be in the field, but that doesn’t mean you’ve been forgotten.

You’re not waiting for God to move He’s waiting for you to be ready. Stay faithful. Stay hidden. Stay humble.

When the time comes, no man, no system, no delay can stop what God already appointed.

Closing Prayer

Father,
Thank You for calling me even when I don’t see the crown yet. Teach me to value the process and to trust Your timing. Give me the strength to serve faithfully while I wait, and the humility to grow before I lead. Refine my heart, protect my posture, and prepare me for everything You’ve already written.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
