The Commission of Joshua: Be Strong and Courageous (Joshua 1:1–9)
Moses has died, and the leadership of Israel is now placed on Joshua. Joshua is standing at a major transition, and transitions can feel heavy because you can’t go back, but you also can’t see everything ahead. God speaks directly to Joshua, not with pressure, but with promise. He tells Joshua to rise, to move forward, and to lead with strength and courage because God Himself will be with him.
The Words Spoken (Joshua 1:1–9)
After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua… saying:
“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan…
Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you…
No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life.
As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
Be strong and of good courage…
Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law…
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night…
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
What this commission reveals about God
God does not abandon His people in transition. When seasons shift and roles change, God remains constant. He does not just give Joshua an assignment, He gives Joshua His presence. God also reveals that courage is not a personality trait, it’s obedience with God’s promise underneath it. And the foundation of Joshua’s success is not hype, it is the Word of God staying in his mouth and in his mind.
What this commission speaks over us today
If you are stepping into something new, this is for you. New seasons can trigger fear, doubt, and overthinking. But God did not tell Joshua to be strong because Joshua felt strong. God told him to be strong because God was with him.
This passage teaches us three simple anchors for 2026 and beyond:
-
Move forward even when you feel stretched
God said, “Arise… go over.” Faith does not wait for perfect feelings. -
Stay rooted in the Word
God tied Joshua’s courage to meditation, obedience, and speaking the Word. -
Remember the Presence
The promise “I will not leave you nor forsake you” is the difference between panic and peace.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You that You do not leave me in transition. You are the same God in every season. I receive Your command and Your comfort. Make me strong and courageous, not in my own strength, but in Your presence. Help me to obey quickly, think clearly, and speak Your Word faithfully. Remove fear and confusion. Order my steps. As I move into what You have for me, let peace guard my heart and wisdom guide my decisions. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Declarations
I am strong and courageous because God is with me.
I will not be afraid or dismayed.
God is ordering my steps and establishing my path.
I will speak God’s Word and meditate on it daily.
Every place God has assigned to me, He will provide for me there.
