Letter to the Woman Whose Child Is Breaking Her Heart

You are not failing.
You are fighting.
Before you read one more word, you need to know the difference.
I know what your mornings look like.
I know you wake up with the weight already on you before your feet hit the floor. I know you have replayed every decision you made over the past ten years looking for the exact moment you went wrong. I know you have gone back through conversations and seasons and years asking yourself what you missed.
I know because that is what loving mothers do.
When the child they gave everything to is somewhere they cannot reach them.
And I want to say this first.
The fact that it is still breaking your heart is proof that you have not stopped fighting.
Broken hearts do not belong to women who stopped caring.
This is not a letter that is going to tell you everything is fine.
You did not come here for that. And I am not going to insult your pain with a promise I cannot make.
What I am going to tell you is what God says.
Because what God says is different from what fear says.
Fear says you have lost them. God says He knows exactly where they are.
Fear says it is too late. God says He is the God of the appointed time.
Fear says your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling. God says there is not one of them He has missed.
Proverbs 22:6 has been both a comfort and a sword for mothers in your position.
You know the verse. You have held it and questioned it in the same breath. "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it."
That word old has carried a lot of mothers through a lot of nights.
Not soon.
Not next month.
Not when you have done everything right.
When he is old.
Which means the story is not over.
Which means the chapter you are living right now is not the last page.
Which means you do not have permission to close the book.
You are not responsible for every choice your adult child makes.
You were responsible for planting. You were responsible for watering. You were responsible for pointing them toward the sun.
But they are the ones who choose whether to grow.
And the God who breathed life into them in the first place is still breathing.
He did not stop when they walked away.
He did not stop when they stopped calling.
He did not stop when they made the choice you saw coming from a mile away and could not prevent.
He is still in the middle of their story.
And so is every prayer you have prayed.
Every single one.
I want you to pray something specific today.
Not a desperate prayer. Not a bargaining prayer. Not a prayer soaked in fear wearing the clothes of faith.
A declaring prayer.
A prayer that says: I know who my God is. I know what He can do. And I am standing on that truth even when I cannot see the evidence of it yet.
PRAYER:
Lord, I bring my child to You by name right now. You know where they are. You know what they are carrying. You know what brought them to this place and You know what it is going to take to bring them through it.
I am releasing the weight of their choices from my shoulders to Yours. Not because I do not care. Because I care too much to carry what only You can carry.
I declare that no weapon formed against my child will prosper. I declare that every seed of Your Word that was planted in them is still alive in the soil of their spirit. I declare that You are working in the moments I cannot see. In the 3am moments when no one is watching. In the quiet moments when they are alone with their own thoughts. You are still speaking to them.
Bring them home. Bring them back to themselves. Bring them back to You. And in the meantime, strengthen me to keep standing.
I trust You with the one I love most.
In Jesus name. Amen.
